SHAPE MATTERS

Circular tables are good for conversation and feel more inclusive, making it easier to talk not just to your immediate neighbours but everyone. Square and rectangular tables will line up neatly with other furniture and can be pushed against the wall if you need space, for a party, for example.

SIZE IT UP

As a rule of thumb, a square table measuring 90cm x 90cm, or a 90cm diameter circular one, will seat four people snugly. For six people, a rectangular 150cm x 90cm table, or a circular 130cm diameter design will work. For eight people, allow a table of 200cm x 100cm, or 150cm diameter.

Get the right size of table for the space. When you've found a table you like, and before you buy, check if it will work in your space. Cut and stick together sheets of newspaper to the size of your table, and lay the template on the floor to give you a sense of how it will fit. Remember you'll need around 60-90cm from the table edge to the nearest wall/piece of furniture, and if you can spare 100cm there will be even more room for people to walk behind seated diners.

Consider tables that can be extended if you like to have a big crowd over. Gateleg tables, which have a flap or flaps that fold down, are perfect for compact rooms. Check that there's enough space when at its maximum size.

TWICE THE VALUE

If your table will double as an eating and working space, you'll need one with a practical, hardwearing surface. For instance, a design with a top that can be re-oiled or painted would be better than a lacquered one.

How To Restore Dining Table

How To Restore Dining Table

Today I'm sharing everything you need to know to refinish your old, run down wood table and make it beautiful again.  Learn how to refinish a table including how to strip away the old finish, paint the legs, restain the top, and protect the finish so that it will last for years to come.

If you saw my table from a distance, you'd think I was crazy for calling it worn out. It is an absolutely beautiful table with gorgeous wood grain and beautiful details.  Up close things aren't quite as pretty though.

dining table that needs to be refinished

The top was absolutely covered with scratches and huge scuffs where the finish was completely gone. And the legs and apron were also covered in nicks and dings.

This was definitely not how this beautiful table was meant to look.

apron of wood table needing to be refinished

I found this table a little over a year ago on Facebook Marketplace and it was an absolute steal. I scored the table with two leaves and six matching chairs for only $50!

I was six months pregnant at the time so I knew it wouldn't be refinishing the set anytime soon. So we set them up in our dining room, scuffs and all and called it good.

Well, here we are more than a year later and I decided it was finally time to refinish the table.

(The matching chairs need a bit more repair so they are hanging out in our basement for now until I get around to dealing with them. Luckily my blue chairs also look great with the table.)

Nobody would call this table run down now! Just look at that gorgeous wood grain.

I love painting furniture, but there is just something about restoring a beautiful piece of wood furniture that is almost magical.

Materials Used to Refinish Table

For stripping the old finish

  • KleanStrip Stripper
  • KleanStrip Paint Stripper After Wash
  • chip brush
  • metal container – an old metal bowl or pan works well for this
  • stripping brush
  • plastic paint scraper
  • stripping pads
  • clean rags
  • gloves
  • sanding block and extra sandpaper, 220 and 400 grit

For painting the legs

  • Zinsser Bullseye Clear Shellac
  • General Finishes Snow White Milk Paint (one of my favorite furniture paints)
  • paintbrush – these are some of my favorites for painting furniture
  • HomeRight Finish Max Sprayer – you definitely do NOT have to have a paint sprayer to paint furniture, but it does make the job go much faster!
  • Large Homeright spray shelter – this is completely optional, but if you are painting furniture with a paint sprayer, this spray shelter is a great way to protect the area where you are working from overspray.

For staining the table top

  • Minwax prestain wood conditioner
  • Minwax Provincial stain
  • clean rags
  • Minwax Fast Drying Polyurethane, Satin
  • foam brush
  • 400 grit sandpaper

How to Refinish a Table

Stripping the Old Finish

The first step is stripping away the old finish from the table top. This is probably the most intimidating part of the whole process, but it truly isn't difficult, just messy and a bit tedious.

There are two main methods of removing paint or stain from wood furniture: sanding and using a chemical stripper.

I've used both methods, but in most cases I prefer using a stripper. Sanding can be time-intensive and it is very easy to unintentionally sand marks into the wood or sand right through wood veneer.

Using a stripper requires more steps (including a bit of sanding at the end), but it leaves a perfectly smooth wood surface in the end. I used KleanStrip Stripper .

There are other strippers available that use slightly less harsh chemicals and are more environmentally friendly but they tend to take much longer to work.

I chose to use KleanStrip because it works really well and really fast. Since it is full of pretty strong chemicals, it is important to take all appropriate safety precautions.  It is best to work outside and be sure that you wear gloves to protect your skin.

Pour some stripper into a metal container and use a cheap chip brush to brush a layer of stripper onto your table top.  My table is pretty large, so I worked in smaller sections.

This stuff works very quickly; I was able to see the finish immediately begin to separate from the wood.

Wait around ten minutes and then you can test a small area to see if it is ready to scrape.

using furniture stripper to strip the old stain

Use a plastic paint scraper to scrape away the old finish. This part is very messy. It helps to have paper towels nearby just in case and also to have an old box to scrape the mess into.

If the finish feels sticky or resists as you scrape, it isn't ready yet. You should be able to scrape it away without much effort.

stripping a table with a wire brush

Use a wire brush to scrape away the finish from the table edge.

Once you have scraped away the finish, the table will probably still look pretty messy. If there is a lot of thick varnish left, you may need to repeat the stripping process.

Otherwise, you can skip straight to applying the KleanStrip Paint Stripper After Wash . This really helps clear away the rest of the finish and most of the stain as well.  Use a stripping pad to apply After Wash to a small section, scrubbing it into the wood in small circles.

Then use a second stripping pad dampened with water, to help rinse away the remaining residue. Finally use a rag to wipe away any remaining water and gunk.

refinish a table with furniture stripping after wash

Look what a huge difference the After Wash makes. The section to the left hasn't received any After Wash yet, while the section to the right has.

Once the table has fully dried, you can use sandpaper to remove those last stubborn bits of stain and ensure the finish is nice and even. You want to use extra fine sandpaper and be sure to sand in the same direction as the wood grain.

And yes, it is best to sand by hand at this point, rather than with a power sander.

I started by sanding my tabletop with a 220 grit sanding block, followed by 400 grit. This really helped remove the last little traces of stain and leave a perfectly smooth, even surface ready for new stain.

After sanding remove all of the sawdust from the tabletop using a soft cloth.

Painting the Table Legs

I chose to paint the legs of the table rather than restaining them for a couple of reasons. I did not want to take on the task of stripping the stain from all of the nooks and crannies on this table and luckily, I really love the look of a table with white legs and a wood top.

Even though painting is simpler than restaining, there are still some important steps to follow. The first step to painting a piece of furniture is always cleaning. It's important to clean away greasy residue, crumbs, and dust to leave a clean surface that paint will stick to.

After cleaning, I used painter's tape and some extra thick wrapping paper to cover the freshly stripped tabletop to protect it during painting.

painting a table with a paint sprayer in a paint shelter

When painting furniture white, I always start with a good sealer or primer to prevent wood tannins from bleeding through the paint and yellowing the finish.

In this case, I used spray on Zinsser Bullseye Clear Shellac . Since it comes in spray paint form, it was really fast to apply to the turns and details of my table apron and legs.

I applied two coats of sealer and once it was dry used General Finishes Milk Paint in Snow White .

I applied two coats of paint using my HomeRight Super Finish Max Paint Sprayer.

Of course, you can also use a paintbrush to apply your paint; it will just take more time. I did use a paintbrush to help fill in some spots that the sprayer didn't do a great job of hitting.

Staining the Tabletop

Once I saw how beautiful my naked tabletop was, I strongly considered skipping the stain and leaving the wood its natural color. But I decided to go classic with a medium stain instead.

I chose Minwax Provincial Stain . It has a beautiful color that isn't too yellow and is light enough it won't hide the beautiful wood grain.

Before staining, I used a clean rag to apply Minwax pre-stain conditioner.

using prestain wood conditioner when refinishing a table

This helps prepare the wood so that the stain goes on more evenly. Wipe off any excess wood conditioner and allow it to dry for around 15 minutes.

staining a tabletop with a clean rag

Then use a clean rag to apply the stain.  Wipe it on in long, even strokes and be sure to keep a wet edge.

Wipe off any excess stain and allow the stain to fully dry following all instructions on the can of stain. If you want the color to be a bit deeper, you can apply a second coat of stain after 4-6 hours.

Allow the stain to fully dry before applying a sealer. Eight hours is the recommended minimum amount of time and will probably feel like far too long.  Just be patient.  We definitely don't want to screw things up at this point!

Sealing the Tabletop

When refinishing a table, it is very important to seal your finish well.  Tabletops take lots of abuse and nobody wants to have to refinish their table again after only a few months of use.

applying polyurethane when refinishing a dining table

I used Minwax Fast Drying Polyurethane to finish my tabletop, but to be honest, this is not my favorite product to work with. I find it very difficult to apply smoothly without brushmarks, even when using a foam brush to apply.

(Confused about top coats and which ones are best for refinished furniture?  I have to-the-point reviews of all of the best and worst furniture sealers right here.)

I applied three coats to this tabletop using a foam brush, sanding with 400 grit sandpaper between coats to help smooth out the brushmarks.

I much prefer General Finishes High Performance Top Coat. It is more forgiving and easier to apply and works well over both stain and paint.

The Refinished Table

Check out this beauty now!

Now that is one beautiful table!

In some of the photos, it looks like one section of the table is a different color from the rest. In reality, everything is the same. Because of the angled wood grain, the various sections catch the light differently and may appear to be different colors.

Dining Chair Protective Covers

Dining Chair Protective Covers

Palliser Furniture/YouTube

If you're finding that it's getting increasingly difficult to get up from or sit down in your favorite seat, a lift chair can help you stay safer and more comfortable while assisting you with sitting and standing. Because these chairs are part furniture and part medical equipment, you may be wondering if Medicare can help cover some or all of the costs. Learn more about lift chairs and whether Medicare may pay some of the expenses to decide if one of these medical devices is right for your needs.

First, it's important to understand what a lift chair is and what it does. The term may make you think of a stair lift that transfers you between floors of a house, or a patient lift, which aids other people in transferring you to a bed or wheelchair. However, those devices are different. A lift chair looks like a regular chair or comfortable recliner, but it has a motorized element on a metal frame that lifts the chair into an upright position and tilts forward slightly. The motor and frame also tilt back and lower the chair to a typical seated position. You use a small remote with buttons to operate the chair's different functions.

If you have difficulty pushing yourself up from a chair, a lift chair does the work for you, elevating you to almost a standing position. It can also carefully lower you into a seated position. Some chairs recline to a completely flat position so you can comfortably sleep. People who have arthritis or other conditions that limit mobility often find that lift chairs make it easier to stand or sit without assistance from someone else.

You might see lift chairs called "power lift recliners" or "multi-position recliners," but these names all refer to the same type of chair. Where lift chairs differ, however, is in the options they're available with and the number of positions they can accommodate. Whatever your body proportions may be, you can find a comfortable lift chair. They come in varying widths and heights, and you can find them upholstered in materials like fabric, vinyl and leather. Some of these chairs also come with comfort options like heated areas and massage capabilities. You can also find customizable chairs, but keep in mind that you may have to pay more out of pocket to get the features you want than you would if you opted for a more basic model.

Medicare and Lift Chairs

If you're considering getting a lift chair and you have healthcare coverage under Medicare, you may be wondering if Medicare covers the cost of the chair, particularly when you're using it due to limited mobility resulting from a health condition like arthritis. Part B, which is the part of Medicare that covers medical equipment, may pay for the costs associated with your lift chair. This part of Medicare covers durable medical equipment (DME), which includes assistive and adaptive devices like wheelchairs and power scooters. Part of a lift chair is considered DME because it helps with limited mobility, conditions that affect balance and other health issues.

The part of the chair lift that Medicare considers DME is the lift mechanism itself. This means that the upholstered, cushioned part of the chair isn't covered under Medicare, despite the fact that this fabric-covered seat is attached to the motorized lift element. In order for Medicare to cover the chair lift, the lift must be motorized and cannot use spring devices to elevate the seat.

There are also certain situations in which Medicare won't cover a chair lift. If you're living in a skilled nursing facility or a hospital, you may not be eligible for coverage of your lift chair until you return home. If Medicare has also paid for you to get a scooter, wheelchair or other motorized device, it won't cover the costs you'll pay for a chair lift, even if your doctor deems it medically necessary.

Medicare Coverage Eligibility

You may be eligible for Medicare Part B to cover some of the costs of your chair lift if a doctor deems the lift medically necessary and you have a completed Medicare form for a lift chair (called a Certificate of Medical Necessity CMS-849 – Seat Lift Mechanisms).

In order to be eligible for coverage of your chair lift and for it to be deemed "medically necessary" for you, you need to meet certain medical standards Medicare has set. For example, you must be unable to stand up from a regular armchair unassisted, and you must have severe arthritis in your hip or knee. You need to be able to operate the chair lift on your own, and you need to be able to walk once you're standing, even if you need to use a walker, cane or other device to do so. These aren't the only conditions you need to meet, and it's important to talk to your doctor about eligibility once you've decided to explore your options for getting a chair lift.

It's also important to note that, even if you're eligible for Medicare to cover some of the costs of your lift chair, you'll still pay 20% of the cost for the motorized lift element and all of the costs for the upholstered seat component. Medicare covers about 80% of the approved cost of the motorized lift element only.

How Safe Is Outdoor Dining at Your Favorite Restaurant?

Photo Courtesy: Joe Giddens/PA Images/Getty Images

The world has been craving any type of normalcy since the COVID-19 pandemic changed life as we know it. Eating at your favorite restaurant may help you feel closer to normal — except the pandemic has thrown the restaurant industry into chaos. Over 110,000 restaurants and bars closed at some point in 2020 — whether temporarily or permanently — due to the pandemic, and countless others have tried to survive by reopening business outdoors by following local guidelines about maintaining social distancing. But is outdoor dining even safe? Before you head to your local restaurant or bar, learn what changes these establishments have implemented and what health recommendations the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has made.

Innovations That Establishments Are Adopting for Year-Round Operation

Many restaurants everywhere from New York City to San Francisco are now offering outdoor dining and following new safety measures to help curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. On top of enhanced sanitation, temperature checks and distanced tables, some restaurants have set up shop on sidewalks and in backyards to attract customers and keep them safe. Picnic tables and outdoor chairs are common items restaurants utilize to make outdoor dining possible. Using patio furniture is ideal when the weather's pleasant but it's more of a challenge to keep customers comfortable in the middle of a surprise thunderstorm or in chillier temps.

Some spots are investing in heated igloos, tents with sliding walls, warm cloths and fire pit seating to help customers remain comfortable outdoors year-round. For instance, Minnesota's ninetwentyfive restaurant installed 7-foot-tall heated igloos with tops that keep the space warm. In Philadelphia, Italian restaurant Le Virtù set up infrared heaters in its outdoor area.

Keeping diners warm is hospitable, but it might not keep them safe. According to Dr. Iahn Gonsenhauser, an internist for Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center, a sealed igloo could be just as unsafe as an indoor dining room. He ultimately advised that if an outdoor space was made to keep diners warm instead of providing better airflow, that's a concern.

How Safe Are the Restaurant Modifications?

Outdoor dining is safer than indoor dining due to its greater air circulation. Health experts explain that the virus weakens in air movement, so more air circulation is better. In an outdoor setting, "there's a lot of ambient movement of air and dispersal of the droplets or the particles. So just by virtue of that, the risk is definitely lower in an outdoor setting," explained infectious disease expert Dr. Rekha Murthy.

Photo Courtesy: Joe Giddens/PA Images/Getty Images

According to Anne-Marie Gloster, a lecturer at the University of Washington's School of Public Health, the stalls' sizes and openings are important to consider. "I think large tents with a top and open sides can still be called outside. In hotter climates and on sunnier days, the shade protection is necessary for comfort and sun protection. Air can still circulate freely in those environments," Gloster said. This makes spacious pods and tents more suitable options for restaurants when the weather turns cold and damp. The risk is higher when a capsule's room is cramped, however.

Despite these extra measures restaurants have implemented, the CDC is still concerned about the spread of the virus when people eat at establishments.

Why Health Experts Are Worried About Outdoor Dining

Although COVID-19 transmission is less likely to occur in outdoor settings, the risk isn't zero. According to the CDC, outdoor seating is considered a "more-risk activity," even if a restaurant has limited seating capacity and enough space between tables. The risk grows when both indoor and outdoor seating is available on-site. The highest risk? When there are no limits on seating capacity and tables aren't spaced at least 6 feet apart.

Dining out is also potentially dangerous because you must remove your face mask to eat or drink around others who aren't wearing face coverings, and this increases the likelihood of transmission. However, the CDC does outline actions patrons can take to reduce their chances of contracting or spreading the virus.

What diners can do to minimize the risks in outdoor settings:

  • Research restaurants to find those with outdoor seating, plenty of fresh air, space between each table and limited capacities.
  • Don't choose dining options that are self-serve due to shared utensils and other high-touched surfaces.
  • Contact the restaurant and ask about the face mask policy. Avoid places that don't require staff or customers to wear face coverings.
  • Only dine with people in your household or a trusted social bubble.
  • Wear masks as much as possible, even when you're 6 feet apart from other diners or when you're not consuming anything.
  • Wash your hands or use a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol when entering and leaving the establishment.

Despite these recommendations for patrons to stay safe, diners can still catch the virus. As reported by the CDC in September, "adults with positive SARS-CoV-2 test results were approximately twice as likely to have reported dining at a restaurant than were those with negative SARS-CoV-2 test results."

If you're fully vaccinated, guidelines remain somewhat similar. The CDC advises that it's fine to visit other fully vaccinated, low-risk people in private settings without the need to wear a mask and that it's okay to travel domestically and internationally without the need for quarantining or testing. However, you'll want to continue taking the recommended steps we've been practicing throughout the pandemic in various situations. This means that you should keep avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces — both of which you'll have a higher likelihood of encountering at a restaurant or bar. The CDC notes that you should also continue wearing an appropriate mask and practicing physical distancing, particularly in public spaces or when you're visiting a household where people haven't been fully vaccinated. And, whether at a restaurant or elsewhere, you'll still want to avoid medium- and large-sized gatherings.

The best way to protect everyone and support restaurants during a pandemic? Stick to the lowest-risk activities — drive-through, delivery, takeout and curbside pickup.

TWICE THE VALUE

If your table will double as an eating and working space, you'll need one with a practical, hardwearing surface. For instance, a design with a top that can be re-oiled or painted would be better than a lacquered one.

A wooden dining table is a stunning way to bring a traditional yet country rustic charm into the dining room. Create a grand dining experience with beautiful, oak veneer finishing and a solid oak frame. Or choose something a little more contemporary with a fresh two-tone style in hardwearing acacia wood. Whatever your taste, there's a style to suit everyone.

Opt for an extending wooden dining table to accommodate those extra guests. Our round and rectangular designs will provide your visitors with plenty of space in which to dine in style. For small families, browse our

dining tables and 4 chairs set

and enjoy eating together around a beautiful table.

If wood would not suit your décor, then why not add a sense of grandeur and luxury and make every meal an occasion with a

marble dining table.

With black and white marble finishes, our high-glossed styles are wonderfully opulent and will definitely catch the attention of your dinner party guests with their distinctive Italian inspired design.
